HCM CITY –  HCM City plans to put over 1,000 new buses into service by 2020, according to the city’s Department of Transport.

Trần Quang Lâm, deputy director of the city’s Department of Transport, said the department had submitted a report to the city’s People’s Committee on solutions to improve public transport by 2020, focusing on school buses.

The city aims to increase bus usage among students to at least 15-20 per cent by 2020, compared to the current rate of 3 per cent.

Within the city, ticket subsidies for students are VNĐ2,830 a trip (for a maximum of two trips per day), and in Cần Giờ District, VNĐ3,537 per trip (maximum of four trips per day).

Lâm said the current subsidy for students was inadequate.

The Department of Transport, which is working with the Department of Education and Training on new bus ticket prices and subsidies, has asked several other agencies to ensure traffic safety within school areas, especially during peak hours.

“Encouraging students to use public buses is a great way to reduce traffic jams and pollution levels in the city,” Lâm said. – VNS
