HCM CITY  A court in HCM City has handed jail terms and suspended sentences to 64 people who participated in an online gambling ring operating on www.dafabet.com.

The People’s Court on Monday sentenced ring leader Wong Boon Leong, a Singaporean resident, to 14 months and 24 days in prison for organising gambling.

Wong’s sentence is equal to the time he has already spent behind bars since he was arrested in December 2015, which means he is allowed to walk free following the verdict.

The other 63 defendants who joined Wong in Dafabet’s activities received sentences ranging from nine months probation to three years in prison on charges of gambling and organising gambling.

According to the indictment, after arriving in Việt Nam in December 2014, Wong colluded with a number of accomplices to open 43 accounts at local banks to receive and transfer money as part of the Dafabet website’s transactions.

The Dafabet website is an online betting and gaming site which is based in the Philippines.

Over VNĐ320 billion (US$14 million) was transacted by the gambling ring and Wong and his accomplices illegally earned hundreds of millions of Vietnamese đồng through the transactions. In particular, Wong received nearly $30,000 between March 2015 and November 2015. — VNS
