ĐIỆN BIÊN – An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale hit Mường Nhé District in the northern mountainous province of Điện Biên on Sunday.
The tremor, which occurred at 5pm, was the third seismic activity recorded in the district this year.
Although the epicentre was recorded in Laos, 55km from the Việt Nam-Laos border, people in Mường Nhé District felt the quake, Nguyễn Thái Sơn, head of the provincial seismic observation station, said.
Houses shook and glasses and bottles clinked during the quake. People rushed out of their homes, afraid of aftershocks.
Mường Nhé District was hit by earthquakes of 4.7 and 3.1 magnitude on April 23 and July 30, respectively, with the epicentre located about 10km from Mường Nhé Township.—VNS
