Cross-border drug gang busted by police

HCM CITY (VNS) — The HCM City police have busted a major gang trafficking drugs from Laos, arresting eight members over a period of time and seizing a massive quantity of drugs and precursors, a gun and cash.

Officers from the anti-drug police and Ministry of Public Security kept tabs on the gang for over one year during which time they made the arrests, the last one was in November.

At the end of 2014 the police came across the gang, led by Nguyen Thi Hoa, 67, of Nghe An and her daughter Do Thi Dung, 34, who live in the city's Hoc Mon District.

Hoa had only been released in 2013 after a life sentence for selling drugs.

On December 30, the police arrested Tran Quy Dang, 51, and his brother with more than 3kg of heroin and 2kg of ice they were transporting from their native Quang Binh Province to HCM City.

The police searched Hoa and Dung's house in Hoc Mon, Dung's house in Tan Binh and those of three other gangsters working for Hoa.

In all they seized 75.5 cakes of heroin – which are often 300-400g — 2kg of ice, 5.7kg of drug precursors, two cars, a pistol, 20 bullets, and VND3 billion (US$140,000) and $22,700. — VNS
