HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam is closely co-operating with South Korea authorities to solve the alleged murder of a Vietnamese mother and daughter early this month, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Deputy Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang yesterday.

On Monday, the bodies of a Vietnamese woman, her South Korean ex-husband and their daughter were discovered in Seoul's Guro District. Preliminary investigation shows that the ex-husband allegedly killed the two and later committed suicide.

"We offer profound condolences to the families of the victims," said the Deputy Spokesperson in the ministry's regular press meeting yesterday.

The Vietnamese embassy in South Korea will provide assistance to the victims' families regarding funeral procedures, and has so far requested South Korea authorities to come up with preventive measures against the recurrence of similar incidents, Hang said.

Viet Nam, for its part, will continue its co-operation with the country to intensify management efforts to strictly handle violation cases in the international marriage cases.

US aircraft to Singapore

Regarding the recent Singapore permission for a US surveillance aircraft to deploy from its territory, the Deputy Spokesperson said that every constructive activity that helped to sustain peace and stability in the region was welcomed by Viet Nam.

"Maintaining peace and stability in the East Sea is the benefit and common responsibility of all nations in and beyond the region," she said.

Under an agreement reached by Washington and Singapore, an American P-8 Poseidon military aircraft will be deployed to the island country later this month to support "maritime security efforts" in the East Sea region, said the two countries' joint statement released on Monday.

Russian plane

Viet Nam is deeply concerned about Turkey's downing of a Russian jet on November 24 and hopes the two countries will hold talks to prevent tensions from escalating.

Viet Nam hoped that similar incidents would never been repeated, Hang said, adding that the country supported the international community's efforts to fight terrorism under any forms and extreme violence.

The issues should be solved in accordance with the UN Charter and fundamental principles of international law on national sovereignty independence and territorial integrity and ensuring safety for people, she noted.

The Turkish air force said its warplanes shot down a Russian SU-24 bomber near the Syrian-Turkish borders on November 24, claiming the Russian aircraft had violated Turkish airspace. Russia refuted Turkey's statement, saying the Russian plane was in Syrian airspace when it was shot down. — VNS
