HCM CITY— The number of Vietnamese students in the US this year increased by 12.9 per cent compared to last year, according to data from the Institute of International Education.
Viet Nam now leads all Southeast Asian countries with 18,722 students in the US. The country ranks ninth among countries with student nationals studying in the US.
The majority of them study at the undergraduate college and university level. In the 2014-2015 academic year, the breakdown was 66.5 per cent for undergraduates; 15.7 per cent for graduate students; 9.4 per cent for others; and 8.4 per cent for students taking part in optional practical training.
Last year, Vietnamese students in US colleges and universities contributed $596 million to the US economy, based on information from Open Doors Report and the US Department of Commerce.
Vietnamese students fluctuated throughout the 1980s and 1990s with a steady trend of growth beginning in the late 1990s.
The number of Vietnamese students has risen significantly since the 1998-1999 academic year, with double-digit growth in many of those years.
Viet Nam has been among the top 20 places of origin for students since the 2006-2007 year and has been in the top 10 since the 2010-2011 academic year.
US Consul General Rena Bitter said that education was the best investment for any country or family, and is a natural area for co-operation between the US and Viet Nam.
