HCM CITY (VNS) — Police Department of Criminal Investigation in Social Order (PC45) in HCM City smashed an illegal lottery gambling ring and arrested 14 people for organising gambling sessions.

The leader of the gambling ring, 62-year-old Tran Tuc, a resident of HCM City's Binh Thanh District, has been convicted twice earlier for fraud and robbery.

The gambling game, called so de, is an illegal numbers game based on the state lottery, allowing players to bet any amount they

want for payoffs up to 70 times the original wager.

After keeping a close watch on a suspect group of people for a long period, the HCM Police raided nine locations in District 1, Binh Thanh, Go Vap and Thu Duc Districts on Friday afternoon. They caught the suspects in the act of running an illegal lottery ring and seized about VND3 billion (US$134,500) in cash, 2.5 tael of gold as well as related papers and equipment used for their activity.

Investigation showed that the ring had been operating since April last year.

Tuchad hired Truong Tinh Phat, 45, hailing from Tien Giang Province, to work in their "main office" on Le Quang Dinh Street in Binh Thanh District's Ward 7. Phat's main duty was to receive bets from their agents via fax machines.

The case is being investigated further by the police. — VNS
