BA RIA-VUNG TAU (VNS) — Three survivors, together with the bodies of 12 fishermen who were killed in a fatal gas explosion on a fishing vessel off southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, have been taken to the mainland, the Vung Tau Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre said.
At 1.30 pm on Saturday afternoon, a rescue boat of the centre had managed to bring 15 victims back to its port in Vung Tau City. Three fishermen are still missing.
The fishing vessel numbered BV 97799 TS, carrying 18 crew members, was returning to shore on Tuesday when its engine suddenly failed off Con Dao Island of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.
Captain Tran Ngoc Long asked three fishermen to raise the anchor to continue its journey at midnight shortly after the engine resumed operation.
Some of the fishermen smelt the gas leaking, and all people were tossed into the sea when a gas cylinder on the boat exploded. The boat sank immediately.
Three fishermen luckily survived as they could hang onto a fishing net and be saved by two other fishing boats on Wednesday morning.
Nguyen Xuan Sang, head of Viet Nam Maritime Administration said that the search has been continued to find the three missing fishermen. As many as 12 local fishing vessels and rescue boats from authorised agencies have been mobilised for the search.
