HA NOI (VNS) — The new academic year started on Saturday for 22 million students and more than a million teachers across the country.

There are about 44,000 educational facilities across the country, with more than 14,200 kindergartens, 15,200 primary schools, 10,800 junior high schools, 2,700 senior high schools and nearly 220 universities. Out of these, 16,276 schools have met the national standards for meeting certain criteria on teaching staff and facilities.

Schools are expected to continue comprehensive reforms on teaching methodology, studying and curriculum this year, aiming to improve the quality of education and training in Viet Nam.

Students are encouraged to focus on creative activities, scientific research and soft skills.

On the occasion many Party, State, and Ministry of Education and Training officials attended ceremonies at various schools nationwide.

Attending the opening ceremony at Cam Pha High School in the northern province of Quang Ninh, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh highlighted achievements made by the school and the province's education sector in general.

Quang Ninh was the first locality to effectively recruit education officials through public examinations, Minh said. He presented the school VND100 million (US$4,500) in funding.

Tong Thi Phong, National Assembly vice chairwoman, joined students and teachers at Yen Thuy Boarding School, which houses ethnic minority students in the mountainous province of Hoa Binh.

She also presented 20 scholarships to students with good grades from low-income families. This year Yen Thuy, which has 220 students, aims to meet all national standards.

In HCM City, more than 1.5 million students went to school despite the high temperatures for their opening ceremonies.

Le Thanh Hai, the city's Party Committee secretary, beat a drum to mark the beginning of the year at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted in District 5.

"School time is definitely the best time," he said. "You should begin the new school year with excitement and feel proud of being part of a school famous for beautiful architecture and with a long tradition of education. You must take the initiative to gain knowledge and improve yourself in all aspects to contribute to the country and city's development."

The number of students attending school in HCM City is set to increase this year by nearly 85,000, creating more pressure for an already overloaded education system.
