QUANG NINH (VNS) — Hon Gai Coal Company's rescue team said today that they were still searching for a miner trapped in a coal-mine tunnel in the northern Quang Ninh Province's Ha Long City.

Basic calculations showed that the place where the missing miner was said to be trapped was more than 3km from entry hole, making it difficult to reach him.

Nearly 400 rescuers used pumps to remove water and dug the earth to prepare different ways to reach the trapped miner.

Earlier, Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan, National Assembly Deputy Chairman Uong Chu Luu and Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Cao Quoc Hung visited the site to guide the rescue work.

The accident occurred at about 1am yesterday when a void holding water was breached during the extraction of coal. As the earth that was holding back the water collapsed, the tunnel was quickly filled with water, rocks and soil.

Twelve workers from the Thanh Cong Coal Company under the Hon Gai Coal Company were working underground when the incident occurred.

At 5am, rescue forces managed to bring out 11 miners who had been trapped in the tunnel for four hours. One of them, Trieu Quang Viet, was dead. The rest had suffered severe injuries and are now being treated at the Quang Ninh Hospital.

The missing miner's name is Phan Van Van. — VNS
