BINH PHƯỚC (VNS) — Police said on Saturday (July 11) that Nguyễn Hải Dương and Vũ Văn Tiến were the only people involved in the killing of six family members in the southern province of Binh Phước on July 7.

Police officials spoke at a meeting attended by hundreds of reporters and chaired by Deputy Minister of Public Security Le Quy Vuong in the province's Chon Thanh District.

Duong and Tien, both 24, are from An Giang Province and HCM City's Hoc Mon District, respectively.

Based on evidence and confessions from Duong and Tien, investigation officials said the two men killed six people, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

Deputy Minister Vuong said that Duong and Tien did not have accomplices.

Their statements to police matched, he said, adding that two knives were used in the murders.

The two men had no previous convictions. Police said the men had drunk a little wine prior to the murders, but the amount had little mental effect.

Investigation officials said that Duong was motivated by revenge because of his relationship with Le Thi Aùnh Linh, 22, who was killed together with her parents.

His relationship with Linh had been rejected by the family, including Linh's father Le Van My, 48, a wood-processing magnate.

Duong and Linh had been involved romantically for more than four years, and Duong had once lived in the family's villa for a while.

Duong thought of the plan in April. He bought a metal-ball gun for VND6 million (US$280), an electric gun for VND2 million, 30-cm-long knives, gloves, masks and other items.

On July 6, Duong met Tien for coffee and asked him to follow him to rob a wealthy family.

To enter the house at 2am, Duong promised to give money to Du Minh Vy, a relative of the family who was living at the house.

Vy unlocked the gate to permit Duong entry. Duong then killed Vy, according to police.

After asking several people in the house where cash was stored, Duong and Tien tied up and used knives to kill six people staying in the house, except a young child, according to police.

The two men fled with VND4 million in cash, US dollar notes, five mobilephones and an iPad.

Police said the two men were captured four days after Le Van My, his wife, son, daughter and two other relatives were found dead in their villa in Chon Thanh District, according to police.

At the press meeting, Deputy Minister Vuong said information published by the media had helped police in their investigation. — VNS
