KIEN GIANG (VNS) — The Viet Nam Marine Police Force on Sunday seized more than 4,300 packets of smuggled tobacco from a motorboat off Kien Giang Province's Ha Tien.

The marine police said local inhabitants informed them about two people piloting the motorboat from Cambodia to Mui Nai Beach in Ha Tien Town in the southern province.

After a 30-minute chase, the police seized the motorboat and arrested one person named Ha Trang Nghiem. The other person jumped into the sea and escaped.

The police confiscated the motorboat, a Bavapen mobile phone, and more than 4,000 tobacco packets of different brands such as Golden Deer, Ram and Hero.

Nghiem, 35, said he was transporting the packets for Hung (who jumped into the sea) from Cambodia to Viet Nam for VND300,000 (US$15) per trip. He claimed he didn't know they were smuggled tobacco packets. — VNS
