QUANG NGAI (VNS) — The People's Committee of Ly Son Island District has proposed the People's Committee of Quang Ngai central province to ban large boats from fishing along Ly Son Island.
Tran Huu Nguyen, the chairman of the island's People's Committee, said the proposal was to conserve limited marine resources and mark a marine preservation zone here.
According to Nguyen, more and more fishing boats from provinces such as Khanh Hoa, Binh Dinh, and Phu Yen, and several local vessels have started coming here to catch fish in recent years.
They use nets to catch small and big fish and sometimes resort to explosives as well.
Fishermen on different boats frequently fight over the use of explosives to catch fish, Nguyen added.
Over the past few days, dozens of large-capacity vessels from Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa provinces had come here to fish.
Ngo Van Bong, a local fisherman, said that earlier, fishermen here could catch 5-10kg of fish and squid in a day, but now, they don't get any fish because these vessels use explosives to catch them.
Local authorities have not taken any measure to curb this menace, Bong noted.
"We will soon exhaust our marine resources, while coral reefs are also facing complete destruction. Fish breeding cages set up by farmers are also destroyed by these boats," Nguyen said.
Nguyen Quoc Chinh, chairman of the An Hai fisheries union in Ly Son District, said the proposal is relevant as it is necessary to protect marine resources and the environment along the island. — VNS
