QUANG NAM (VNS) — Thousands of dead fish were found in a section of the River Ba Ren in Duy Thanh Commune, Duy Xuyen District, in the central Quang Nam Province, recently.

The dead fish caused a stink and the local people were forced to remove them from the river and bury them.

The people have reportedly removed tonnes of dead fish from the river.

A local fisherman said there has not been a similar incident in the last 20 years.

Ngo Bon, deputy head of the provincial Natural Resources and Environment Department, said a sudden change in the weather might have caused the mass fish deaths.

Pollution also could have caused it, he said.

"In recent months, the river water has become black. We suspect a leather processing workshop nearby has been discharging wastewater into the river," Bon said.

The department has taken water samples for testing to find the real cause of the mass fish deaths. -- VNS
