HA NOI (VNS) — Local police will set up working groups to inspect transport projects in the city, after several accidents occurred at work sites of the Ha Noi urban railway project.

A crane at the Nhon - Ha Noi station site, of which the contractor is Daelim, fell onto two buildings and two houses in Ha Noi's Cau Giay Street on May 12. Officials said a 26-year-old motorbike driver and a pregnant woman were injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Two days earlier, steel sheeting weighing 680kg fell from a crane as it was being hoisted into the air at the Station Four site, of which the contractor is Posco. No one was injured during that incident.

The city's Department of Construction, meanwhile, was asked to set up another working group to examine safety procedures at work sites where crane towers are in use.

The department has further requested that crane towers with operating zones larger than the work site be operational only from 10pm to 6am. Adequate warning systems, guards and staff in charge of transport instruction must also be ensured.

The city authority has further crtiticised the head of the Ha Noi Urban Railway Project Management Board and Systra consulting company for not properly conducting their management and supervisory responsibilities, leading to such accidents.

The Department of Construction was in charge of issuing fines due to violations of work safety rules involving the two contractors, Posco and Daelim. If such incidents are repeated, these contractors would not be able to receive contracts for other projects funded by the city's budget. — VNS
