HCM CITY (VNS) — A woman from the southern Dong Nai province was confirmed to be the first trypanosome protozoa infection case in Viet Nam, the HCM City Hospital for Tropical Diseases said yesterday.

The 38-year-old patient was hospitalised on March 18 after she suffered from high fever for 19 days.

Tests run later showed damage to her liver and kidney, symptoms of severe infection and the presence of the Trypanosoma evansi protozoan parasite in the patient's blood.

After four days of treatment, the infection was cured completely and the patient's health improved. Her condition is now stable.

The hospital doctor Le Buu Chau said Trypanosoma evansi was mostly found in animals such as mice, horses and cattle.

It was very rare to detect the trypanosome in human beings, he said.

The hospital is co-operating with experts from Oxford University and other specialists to do further research in this case and to identify the source of the infection. — VNS
