3 Chinese workers die at hydropower plant

HA GIANG (VNS) — The bodies of three Chinese workers who died in an industrial accident at Thuan Hoa Hydropower Plant in northern mountainous Ha Giang Province were handed over to Chinese authorities yesterday for funerals.

On Tuesday, four workers at the plant in Vi Xuyen District were swept away by strong currents while working inside a water tunnel. Three of them drowned, while the fourth was injured.

Vietnamese authorities sent their condolences to the families of the victims, aged 31, 35 and 42.

The workers were recruited by the Chinese contractor of the plant.

Operations have been suspended pending further investigation.

Construction on the VND1.3 trillion (US$60.8 million) Thuan Hoa Hydropower Plant began in mid-2013 and is scheduled to be complete in 2016. — VNS
