QUANG TRI (VNS) — The People's Committee of the central province of Quang Tri started a trial run of the "one-stop-shop" customs model at the Lao Bao-Densavan border gate between Viet Nam and Laos on Monday.

The test is an important step for Quang Tri and its Lao neighbouring province of Savannakhet to review procedures and human resources before the model goes into full operation in early February.

Quang Tri has prepared the necessary equipment and staff to ensure the smooth implementation of customs clearance formalities agreed by the two provinces.

On the occasion, the Viet Nam Border Guard High Command presented a set of equipment and machinery worth VND2.5 billion (US$119,000) to the Lao police in order to help them deploy the model.

Viet Nam and Laos signed a memorandum of understanding on the implementation of the "one-stop shop" model at the Lao Bao-Desavan border gate in 2005 in line with an agreement to facilitate travel and transport signed by the Greater Mekong Sub-region countries.

The mechanism is expected to halve the time it takes to clear customs at the border. — VNS
