QUANG NINH (VNS) — The northern coastal province of Quang Ninh started work on Saturday on a bridge over the Bac Luan river that will connect Mong Cai with Dongxing in China's Guangxi Province.
Quang Ninh co-operated with relevant agencies and Chinese authorities to conduct the project in line with both countries' regulations.
In March 2012, Viet Nam and China officially agreed to construct the bridge, both vowing that the construction would not change the river's flow or harm the river bed. They also agreed that the bridge would be mutually owned and operated.
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, Le Quang Tung, vice chairman of Quang Ninh Province's People's Committee, said agencies and contractors must co-ordinate closely to complete the project swiftly, with quality standards kept intact.
Along with the future Ha Long-Mong Cai expressway, the Bac Luan bridge, in which Viet Nam has invested VND336 billion (US$16 million), will play an important role in transportation and trade between the areas it connects.
In addition, the bridge serves as a gateway between ASEAN and China. — VNS
