HA NOI (VNS) — As many as 51 boats involved in illegal sand mining have been seized by police in the capital city's Phuc Tho District.

The operation, carried out by 200 policemen from the Ministry of Public Security netted records of illegal sales dating back many years, as well as weapons, indicating the possibility that gangs were protecting the illegal business.

Police said the boats are believed to have been directly mining sand from the river bed or filling their hulls at sand depots set up along the river banks during the night for quite some time.

Based on information provided by local residents, the police also arrested a few suspects believed to be leaders of a gang involved in the illegal mining operations. — VNS
