HAI PHONG (VNS) — Police in the northern city of Hai Phong arrested 41 Chinese and Taiwanese and three Vietnamese citizens on Tuesday for telephone scams.
The Taiwanese and Chinese citizens entered Viet Nam via land border gates and made Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) calls to fixed phone and mobile phone numbers in China, claiming that the recipients owed money for various services.
Through collaboration with the Chinese police, Hai Phong police identified Guangxi province resident Lao Jia Jia as one of the victims. She was swindled out of 220,000 CNY (US$35,900) by the group.
Hai Phong police are working with relevant Vietnamese and Chinese agencies to investigate the case. — VNS
