QUANG NINH (VNS) — Typhoon Kalmaegi caused about VND20 billion (US$944,000) worth of damage as it battered the northern-eastern Quang Ninh Province last night.
This was announced by the provincial Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control. The committee added that no casualties have been reported so far.
The storm destroyed more than 5,000 hectares of rice and other crops, and blew away the roofs of 147 houses and damaged 20 electric poles.
The authorised agencies are helping the local people to repair the damage caused by the storm.
A quick report by the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control this morning said that in Hai Phong City, the anchor line of a fishing vessel moored off Cat Ba Island was cut during the storm, injuring a fisherman. The border soldiers took the fisherman to hospital and towed the drifting fishing vessel to the mainland.
The National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting said by7am today, the storm had weakened as a tropical low-pressure system after hitting the northern mountainous areas.
The centre is continuing to issue warnings about landslides and flash floods triggered by the storm in the mountainous provinces. –VNS
