Couple stands trial for transporting drugs

The couple, residents of Ha Noi's Phu Nghia Commune, were found carrying seven cakes of heroin weighing more than 2.4 kg in a car from northern Hoa Binh Province to Ha Noi.

HOA BINH (VNS) — The People's Court of northern Hoa Binh Province yesterday sentenced a 61-year-old man to life imprisonment and his wife to 16 years for illegally transporting drugs.

The couple, residents of Ha Noi's Phu Nghia Commune, were found carrying seven cakes of heroin weighing more than 2.4 kg in a car from northern Hoa Binh Province to Ha Noi.

According to the testimony, Hoang Gia Cong was hired to carry the drugs for VND15 million ($707) by a man known only as Truong in northern Hai Phong City. The police also found 3.1 g of drugs in the couple's home.

Also yesterday, police in northern mountainous Lai Chau Province's Pa Tan border commune caught a man transporting two cakes of heroin from Viet Nam to China.

Tan Dien Lu, 45, admitted that he bought the drugs from two unknown people in Ta Phin Commune and intended to sell them to two people in Yunnan District in China for VND520 million ($24,520). — VNS
