HCM CITY (VNS) — The HCM City Department of Health last Saturday launched a campaign to destroy mosquitoes and larvae throughout the city at Thu Duc District Children's House to raise awareness of preventive methods against dengue fever.
According to the Preventive Medicine Department, the entire country has recorded 10,127 incidents of dengue fever since the beginning of this year, a drop of 41 per cent compared to the same period.
However, in HCM City alone, the number of cases has risen by 26.9 per cent since the beginning of the year compared to the same period last year.
Increasing population density and the process of urbanisation has led to difficulties in controlling the disease.
There is no vaccine against dengue or specific treatment for the disease.
The campaign was a part of a national programme to respond to ASEAN Dengue Day on June 15, an advocacy event agreed upon during the 10th ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting in 2010.
Worldwide, 50-100 million people contract dengue fever each year and of that number, about 24,000 people die, according to the World Health Organisation.
In Southeast Asia, the disease has had an upward trend year-by-year.
The Asia Pacific region has 75 per cent of the global burden, and in the Western Pacific region, 31 out of 37 countries and areas have reported dengue fever in the past two decades. — VNS
