HA NOI (VNS) — The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) yesterday asked provinces and cities to strengthen the prevention of rabies in animals.

Provincial and municipal people's committees should disseminate knowledge on symptoms, danger and preventive measures of the disease.

People should vaccinate their dogs and cats against rabies and not let them wander.

Localities must ensure that around 80 per cent of the animals in their areas receive the vaccine.

People who transport and trade dogs and cats illegally or involved in trafficking them across borders will be punished.

Localities where rabies infection has been confirmed must declare the epidemic based on regulations and set up inspection teams to check rabies prevention in their areas.

So far this year, nine provinces and cites in the country have reported on suspected rabies infection in dogs in their areas, according to the MARD.

The country has about 10 million dogs.

The country discovered more than 800 dogs being infected with rabies since 2009, and only 60 per cent of the dogs have been vaccinated.

More than 160,700 people have been bitten by dogs so far this year and are yet to receive preventive treatment. A total of 28 people died in 16 provinces and cities. — VNS
