Extinct barking deer cited after 84 years

Update: March, 06/2014 - 08:05

THANH HOA (VNS)— The Xuan Lien Natural Reserve in the central province of Thanh Hoa's Thuong Xuan District yesterday announced the citing of the extinct Roosevelt's barking deer after 84 years.

The Roosevelt's barking deer (Muntiacus rooseveltorum) is also known as the Roosevelt's muntjac.

The announcement followed the results of a project to protect the muntjac species at the reserve, which was carried out by the Ha Noi-based Viet Nam National University starting 2012. The DNA analysis of the dung, skin, and horn samples matched the sample preserved in the US-based Museum of Natural History since 1929.

Director of the reserve Nguyen Dinh Hai stated that the appearance of the last muntjac was recorded in Laos' Houaphanh Province, and it had been considered extinct since 1929. — VNS
