Judge suspended for taking bribes

Update: November, 30/2013 - 08:41

HAI PHONG (VNS)— The Hai Phong People's Court has decided to temporarily suspend a judge from work during an investigation into accusations that he had accepted bribes.

Ngo Van Anh, Chief Justice of the Economic Bench, has been accused of extorting VND130 million (US$6,250) from Dong Xuan Thep, purportedly to favour him during a trial.

However, unsatisfied with the sentence, Thep asked Anh to return the money. He was able to recover VND50 million ($2,400) and the remaining VND80 million ($3,850) from other two judicial officials.

Thep appealed against his sentence to the Supreme People's Court and filed charges against Anh for bribe-taking.

The case is under further investigation. — VNS
