BINH DINH (VNS)- Floods caused by torrential rains in central provinces killed at least 15 people and one more was still missing this morning, according to the National Search and Rescue Committee.

The victims include seven in Quang Ngai, five in Binh Dinh, two in Gia Lai and one each in Quang Nam and Phu Yen.

The rains from tropical depression Zoraida combined with water released from full power plant reservoirs caused heavy floods and isolated 29 communes of Quang Nam, nine others of Quang Ngai, and 14 of Binh Dinh. Phu Yen and Gia Lai were also seriously affected.

Although the local authorities and residents had plans for evacuation, they were confounded by flash-floods caused by rains of up to 700-800mm in some localities.

Rescue forces have been working with provincial military commands to evacuate people and bring relief food to affected areas. Binh Dinh even had to ask for helicopters to approach isolated hamlets.

Many local rivers have exceeded the top warning levels and the situation is not expected to improve soon.-VNS
