HCM CITY (VNS) — The Family Doctor Network in HCM City will become part of the city's system of general hospitals, private healthcare clinics and community primary healthcare.

Tran Quy Tuong, deputy head of the Health Ministry's Health Examination and Treatment Management Department, said that at least 30 clinics of family doctors would be established in HCM City by 2015 under the 2013-20 national plan on development of family doctor networks.

Patients with common diseases and ailments will be treated at family doctor clinics, easing severe overload at hospitals, Tuong said at a conference held yesterday in HCM City.

"Building and developing this network is one of the fundamental measures to improve community healthcare and reduce patient overload at major hospitals," he said.

Three types of health care establishments will be supported to implement the models of family doctor clinics, including private general hospitals and clinics and community primary care infirmaries in districts, wards and communes, he added.

Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hiep, lecturer of Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine in HCM City, said that several district-level public hospitals, including districts 2, 5, 8, 10 and Binh Tan and community clinics in wards, have participated in the model.

Preferential policies, such as financial support, should be created to encourage private general hospitals and clinics to participate in the model, Hiep said.

HCM City has more than 250 private general hospitals and 5,700 private clinics, according to the city's Department of Health. — VNS
