KHANH HOA (VNS)— Eleven passengers were killed and dozen injured in an accident on National Highway No 1A in the central province of Khanh Hoa early yesterday morning.

Khanh Hoa police said nine people, including the two drivers, were killed just after midnight when a 50-seat coach on the north-south route collided with another coach in the opposite direction in Cam Ranh City's Cam Nghia Commune.

Two other passengers later died in hospital.

Over 50 passengers were hospitalised in Cam Ranh City and Cam Lam District.

The accident prompted Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to request the provincial People's Committee to guide local agencies to provide the victims with emergency aid and support families of the deceased.

He also urged the transport ministry to work with localities to come up with measures to remove traffic jams resulting from the accident, as well as to enhance inspection on the operation of passenger coaches to avoid similar accidents.

The Ministry of Public Security and related agencies were asked to find out the cause of the accident.

Later on the same day, local authorities visited the victims' families.

According to doctor Nguyen Duc Tri from the Cam Lam District's Medical Centre, 10 injured people are in stable conditions. Two of them were discharged yesterday while the remainder would leave hospital today.

Doctor Nguyen Duc Tri, director of Cam Ranh General Hospital – where another 49 injured were being treated – said that eight patients underwent surgery yesterday and were now recovering.

In another incident, 52 passengers escaped death when their bus overturned on National Highway 1A in Cam Xuyen District, central Ha Tinh Province at noon yesterday.

The accident, which left 16 slightly injured, was believed to have occurred as bus driver was drowsy.
