Update: July, 02/2012 - 10:27

HCM CITY — The HCM City Department of Education and Training has announced details of its programme to make English compulsory at all school levels starting this year.

It will cost more than VND408 billion (US$19.4 million), 52 new classrooms with equipment will be built, and 762 more English teachers will be recruited.

Le Hong Son, the department's head, said for the teaching jobs English graduates from universities would be given preference.

Besides, 100 native speakers who graduated from education universities or possess teaching certificates like Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Teaching Knowledge Test, and Teaching English as a Foreign Language will also be hired.

By 2020 the department would start recruiting at least one native speaker for each school, Son said.

Parents of primary-school children would be given a choice between the Ministry of Education and Training's English programme or the department's intensive one, he said.

First graders will have at least four classes a week.

From junior high school onwards, students will have to learn both the ministry and department curriculums.

At 10 selected secondary schools, students will be taught science subjects in English. — VNS
