HA NOI — Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung approved a strategy to develop public transport by 2020 to ease traffic congestion, reduce accidents and decrease environmental pollution in cities and provinces across the country.
In the near future, Ha Noi and HCM City will be required to overhaul their bus networks, with an emphasis on linking city centres with suburban districts, making it much easier for people to travel. Plans will be drawn up in line with a series of new express bus services and include building new urban railways and metro lines.
The strategy also encourages more investment in eco-friendly buses and those accessible to the disabled.
Authorities will also raise awareness on the benefits of using public transport via monthly passes at preferential rates for students and commuters as well as free services for the elderly.
Additional information campaigns will seek to develop responsibility and professional behaviour amongst bus drivers and conductors. — VNS
