QUANG NAM — The central province of Quang Nam should focus on implementing Party initiatives and on building a pure and strong political system, said President Truong Tan Sang at a ceremony in Tam Ky City yesterday to mark the 15th anniversary of the re-establishment of the province (January 1, 1997-2012).

Sang emphasised the need to promote real democracy within the Party and create conditions for the people to contribute ideas on Party building through the Fatherland Front and other social organisations.

The President said that Quang Nam, as a poor province, should bring into full play to its strengths and use its available resources to speed up economic restructuring in the direction of industrialisation and modernisation.

Together with economic development, the province needs to pay attention to improving the material and spiritual life of its people by raising the quality of educational and health care services and promoting cultural activities and sports.

According to Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Nguyen Phuoc Thanh, the province has made remarkable achievements during the past 15 years with an annual GDP growth rate of 10.6 per cent in the 1997-2011 period.

From a province without any industrial zones or complexes, Quang Nam now has nine concentrated industrial zones that have attracted 81 FDI projects with a total investment capital of over US$4.7 billion.

Per-capita income has increased by 10 times from VND2.1 million ($100) in 1997 to VND22.5 million ($1,080) in 2011. The poverty rate has gradually decreased by 2.5-3 per cent per year.

On the occasion, President Sang presented the noble Ho Chi Minh Order to the provincial authorities and people in recognition of their contributions and admirable achievements.
