During this year, the ministry will finalise the institutional framework needed to create a better environment for scientific research and technological applications.
It will also work hard to fulfil its supporting role in the process of economic restructuring and growth model adjustment.
These tasks were assigned by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung yesterday during a meeting with ministry officials to roll out the work agenda for this year.
The ministry should strengthen research in basic sciences, giving priority to mathematics, physics and social sciences, by investing in high-technology zones and laboratories as well as continuing to provide assistance for enterprises to invest in new technology.
"Manufacturers of products for export or essential commodities should make the most of progress in information or biology technologies," he said.
Dung said scientific researchers were still not competent enough, several big science and technology projects were running late and heavily invested laboratories were not performing at full capacity.
