HA NOI — Localities, organisations and individuals donated a total of VND6.6 trillion (US$314 million) to the poor by way of a live TV programme held by the Viet Nam Fatherland Front and the Viet Nam Television in Ha Noi and HCM City on the eve of 2012.
At the "Circle of Unity for the Poor" event, the 10th of its kind, valuable items were auctioned for a total of more than VND9 billion ($428,000).
Addressing the opening ceremony of the programme, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said the programme had received a warm response from the entire political system and foreign and domestic organisations and individuals. The programme reflected the Party and State's policy for caring for the poor, and helped consolidate the national great unity and boost national construction and development, said Hung.
He thanked the sponsors and called on all Vietnamese inside and outside the country to continue contributing to the charity programme.
Over the past 11 years, the Fund for the Poor has mobilised more than VND70 trillion.
From 2009 to 2011, the fund spent more than VND13 trillion on building and repairing almost 1.13 million houses and helped millions of people get out of poverty. — VNS
