HA NOI — Viet nam will start using lethal injections instead of firing squads for executions from November 1. The switch was originally set for July 1 after the Law on Execution of Criminals was passed by the National Assembly last year but later delayed due to a shortage of facilities and human resources.
Under the decree, three drugs will be administered: the anaesthetic sodium thiopental, muscle relaxant pancuronium bromide, and heart stopper potassium chloride. The drugs will be administered at least three times in case the first injection does not work.
Experts claim lethal injections are more humane for the condemned and their family members - and reduces psychological pressure on executioners. — VNS
