Ministry gives nod to Mekong bridges

MEKONG DELTA  — Two new bridges will be built in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta under a master plan approved by the Government, a Ministry of Transport source said.

The Mekong Delta Transport Development plan envisages construction of the Cao Lanh Bridge over the Tien River linking Vinh Long and Tien Giang Provinces, and the Vam Cong Bridge spanning the Hau River linking Can Tho and Dong Thap Province by 2015 to boost socio-economic development.

Also by 2015, National Highway No 91 from Chau Doc town to Tinh Bien District in An Giang Province and the N1 sections from Binh Hiep to Mo Vet in Long An Province and from Chau Doc to Duc Hue District in Long An Province will be upgraded.

The Trung Luong-My Thuan Expressway in Tien Giang Province and the 200-km plus southern coastal corridor running from the Xa Xia bordergate in Kien Giang Province to the southernmost province of Ca Mau will both be completed.

Other roadworks proposed in the master plan are bypasses around Long Xuyen city in An Giang and Ca Mau city and expansion of National Highway 1A between Can Tho and Phung Hiep town in Hau Giang Province.

Three waterways will be built between Ca Mau and Nam Can, Kien Luong and Ha Tien, and Bac Lieu and Ca Mau with several cargo docks along the routes.

Long Binh Bridge will be built to connect An Giang Province with Kandan Province in Cambodia.

Work on the bridge is slated to start in the third quarter of this year, according to the Project Management Board No 7.

The Government has also approved upgrade of Rach Gia Airport in Ca Mau Province and construction of the new Phu Quoc Airport in Kien Giang Province to handle large aircraft.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has ordered relevant local authorities to speedily draft investment plans for urgent projects.

The Government would consider each of them for financial assistance, he added. — VNS
