Southbound train kills two women in Bien Hoa

DONG NAI — A south-bound train from Ha Noi killed two women on motorbikes at Long Binh Ward, Bien Hoa City in southern Dong Nai Province on Wednesday.

The location of the accident did not have crossing barriers or warning signs.

Province unveils plans to develop craft villages

AN GIANG — The Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of An Giang has begun projects to conserve and develop seven craft villages this decade at a total cost of VND4.27 billion (US$204,000), according to a local leader.

They are aimed at not only developing the villages but also at making them tourist-friendly, deputy chairman of the An Giang People's Committee, Vuong Binh Thanh said.

Between 2008 and 2010 the province spent VND60.39 billion ($2.88 million) to develop or build 43 craft villages.

The province has 82 such villages employing 33,000 workers.

Phillips launches power saving programme

HCM CITY — Philips Viet Nam and the central province of Phu Yen have launched a 2011 power saving programme for the province.

The Dutch electronics giant donated 4,000 energy-efficient fluorescent light bulbs to 1,000 poor households in Dong Xuan District's Xuan Quang 2 and Xuan Phuoc Communes.

Since 2009, Phillips Viet Nam has held power saving campaign in 10 provinces across the country, including Vinh Long, Dong Thap, An Giang, Quang Ngai, Quang Tri, Thai Nguyen, Ninh Binh, Nghe An and Phu Yen provinces.

It is now working with Electricity of Viet Nam to distribute information to residents about energy-saving lighting solutions. — VNS
