Nation creates advanced mathematics institute

Update: December, 29/2010 - 09:30
HA NOI — Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung ratified the foundation of the Viet Nam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics.

The institute, to be established in Ha Noi, aims to become a leading research centre allowing Vietnamese mathematicians to develop projects and nurture young talent.

The Prime Minister has instructed the Ministry of Finance to source funding for the institute's operations. The Ha Noi People's Committee would be responsible for providing the institute's office.

The institute, which comes under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education and Training, will include an executive board, scientific committee and research teams. The institute will employ between 15 to 20 permanent staff.

Heading the institute will be a scientific director, who will take the main responsibility for institute research activities and the encouragement of mathematical talent.

Fields Medallist Professor Ngo Bao Chau, who is now working at the Mathematics Faculty of the University of Chicago, had been invited to become the Institute Director, according to Director of the Institute of Mathematics Ngo Viet Trung.

Trung said the main difference between the Viet Nam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics from the existing Institute of Mathematics would be the operating mechanism. The Viet Nam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics would be given the freedom to pursue its own goals and take full responsibility for its activities.

During the next decade, the Government would provide regular funding for the institute's operations.

The establishment of the institute is among the first steps taken to implement the decade-long national programme aiming at developing Viet Nam's expertise in mathematics. — VNS
