Meeting to boost solidarity abroad

HA NOI — A conference will be organised to strengthen solidarity among Vietnamese communities abroad and mobilise their contributions to the country’s development.

The first global conference of overseas Vietnamese, sponsored by the Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (COVA) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will be held from November 19 to 24 in the capital.

Leaders from the Party, State, relevant ministries and sectors, and more than a thousand Vietnamese residing around the globe will attend the event.

According to Nguyen Thanh Son, deputy foreign minister and acting president of COVA, the Prime Minister issued a decree to speed the implementation of the Government’s action programme on overseas Vietnamese. The decree also aims to increase the awareness of this issue at ministries, agencies and localities and protect the legitimate rights of Vietnamese nationals abroad in line with international treaties and laws.

The move would create more favourable conditions for Vietnamese expatriates to study the Vietnamese language and achieve a better understanding of their homeland’s culture, Son said. — VNS
