Gov’t to assess benefits of electric motorcycles

HA NOI — Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai on Monday asked the Ministry of Science and Technology and other relevant ministries to look into the safety and likely environmental benefits of electric motorbikes and bicycles.

Hai also asked authorities in the central province of Quang Tri to permit the sale of electric motorbikes and bicycles assembled in the Lao Bao Special Trade and Economic Zone in the country.

HCM City discovers fake sunglasses

HCM CITY — HCM City Market Watch on Monday discovered a large quantity of fake designer sunglasses with trademarks such as Ray Ban, Vogue and Luxottica, for sale in a shop in Tan Phu District.

The owner of the store failed to provide any documentation for the sunglasses, which were estimated to be worth nearly VND100 million (US$6,250).

Nghe An petrol stations cheating motorists

NGHE AN — Inspectors found that 19 out of 68 petrol stations recently visited in the central province of Nghe An were cheating their customers, the provincial Department of Science and Technology said on Monday.

Inspectors said the petrol stations had adjusted petrol pump metres and that readings were as much as 7.8 per cent out.

Firm fined for mass food poisoning

TAY NINH — Provincial authorities in southern Tay Ninh have fined a food processing company VND119 million (US$7,437) after 1,500 workers at VMC Hoang Gia Company fell ill after eating meals supplied by the firm.

The fine took into account hospital fees.

The incident happened in June. There were no fatalities. — VNS
