THUA THIEN-HUE — The provincial authority of Thua Thien-Hue has approved a project to resettle residents currently living on boats on rivers and lagoons in the province.

Between 2008 and 2010, some 900 households living on boats in the districts of Phong Dien, Quang Dien, Huong Tra, Phu Vang and Phu Loc will be resettled in new residential areas.

Each household will be allocated a plot of land from 150 sq.m to 200 sq.m in these residential areas with well-developed infrastructure facilities to ensure better living standards for them.

The project requires an investment of VND42 billion (US$2.7 million). Capital will come from state coffers and donations from individuals and organisations.

According to figures from Thua Thien-Hue People’s Committee, the province currently has some 2,000 households with 15,000 people living on boats. The ancient city of Hue is housing some 1,000 boat households with nearly 8,000 people now living in the wards of Phu Binh, Phu Hiep, Phu Hau and Vy Da. — VNS
