Viet Nam rejects calls for summit on Thailand protests

Update: April, 19/2010 - 10:13

HA NOI — Viet Nam always respects ASEAN's principles of consensus and non-interference in internal affairs of member countries, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said yesterday.

Nguyen Phuong Nga was responding to a media question why Viet Nam, as the current ASEAN chair, had not convened a meeting to discuss the situation in Thailand nor issued a statement about that.

Nga said Viet Nam had consulted with Thailand and other ASEAN member countries about the political unrest and come to the conclusion that it was unnecessary to make a statement about it at the moment.

She also said that ASEAN member countries had not agreed with the convention of a special summit on Thaland's political situation. — VNS
