HA NOI (VNS) — The National Committee on Professorship Titles yesterday gave certificates to 52 new professors and 470 new associate professors.

Attending the ceremony, Dinh The Huynh, member of the politburo, secretary of the party central committee and chairman of the party central committee's commission for publicity and education, said he was happy that more and more people were becoming professors and associate professors at younger ages and had better knowledge of foreign languages and abilities.

They also have done valuable scientific research that has been publicised in prestigious magazines across the world. The research has been applied effectively in daily life, Huynh said.

Professor Tran Van Nhung, general secretary of the National Committee on Professorship Titles, said more than 80 per cent of the new professors and associate professors this year were university and college lecturers, whereas in the year 1991-92, nearly 60 per cent of the professors and associate professors were lecturers.

"It was a good change," Nhung said.

The youngest professor to get a certificate this year is Nguyen Van Hieu, 43, who is deputy director of the International Training Institute for Materials Science under the Ha Noi University of Technology. He is from the central city of Hue.

Hieu has authored and co-authored 130 scientific research papers.
