YÊN BÁI — Two people died and seven others were injured during a landslide in the northern province of Yên Bái’s Trạm Tấu District late Sunday.

The two deceased are Vàng Thị Phếnh, 49, and eight-month-old Hảng Thị Dính, both from Tống Ngoài Town.

The injured locals were taken to the province’s Nghĩa Lộ General Hospital, some 40km away from the town, for emergency treatment.

The district’s authorities rushed to the scene right after the incident to direct the clean-up of the landslide and visit the affected households.

Financial support of VNĐ5.4 million (US$238) was given to families of each of the deceased and VNĐ2.7 million ($119) was granted to families of those injured.

On the morning of the same day, one local was struck by lighting and died in the province’s Cảm Nhân Commune.

Torrential downpour ravaged the province’s west side all day. The province’s authorities issued warnings asking residents to avoid going near the river and streams or seek shelter under large trees during rain and lightning.

Heavy rainfall also hit northern Điện Biên Province on Sunday and yesterday, causing a major landslide of 4,000cu.m on the stretch of National Route 279 running through the province’s Mường Ảng District. — VNS
