HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam looked forward to increased co-operation with the General Assembly of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung affirmed at a reception yesterday for his counterpart Anibal Pereyra.

Hung held talks with the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay in Ha Noi, during which the two legislative bodies signed a co-operation agreement.

The Vietnamese official recommended that the two sides increase co-ordinating, developing and effectively implementing signed agreements and intensify delegation exchanges as well as mutual assistance at regional and international forums, particularly multi-lateral parliamentary forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Hung took this opportunity to officially invite Pereyra and the leadership of the House of Representatives of Uruguay to attend the 132nd National Assembly of the IPU (IPU – 132) to be held in Ha Noi from March 28 to April 1.

He expected that the attendance of Uruguay's delegation would contribute to the success of the event as well as the relationship between the two parliaments.

Pereyra stated Uruguay's willingness to support Viet Nam in all fields and stressed that the first visit to Viet Nam by the delegation aimed to continue strengthening the friendship between the countries and parliaments.

Pereyra also met yesterday with Deputy PM Pham Binh Minh.

According to the Vietnamese official, economic cooperation between Viet Nam and Uruguay has enjoyed positive results in recent years, with two-way trade hitting US$120 million in 2014, four times higher than that in 2007.

There is great potential for the two countries to set up partnership in agriculture, breeding, farm-aquatic product processing and biotechnology in the near future, he said.

Deputy PM Minh said he hopes the Chamber of Representatives of Uruguay will support the signing and ratification of future cooperation agreements between the two countries.

For his part, Speaker Pereyra said that his country appreciates Viet Nam's role and increasing important position in the region and the world.

He expressed his wish that he will welcome high-level delegations of the National Assembly and Government of Viet Nam in Uruguay in the near future. — VNS
