QUẢNG NINH — Piles of trash have been washed up on large stretches of two beaches in Quảng Ninh Province in the north and Nghệ An in the central region, disappointing tourists and preventing vessels from reaching shore.

Vàn Chảy Beach, the most beautiful on Cô Tô Island in Quảng Ninh, is strewn with domestic garbage, and tourists are avoiding it because of a stench.

Trần Như Long, chairman of the Cô Tô District People’s Committee, said changes in the winds and rainy weather have dumped the trash on the beach.

The district has a campaign to clean the beach regularly, he said.

Quỳnh Long Beach in Nghệ An Province is covered in tree branches, bamboo shoots and plastic for half a kilometre of inland.

Trần Văn Nguyện, chairman of the Quỳnh Long Commune People’s Committee, said he has no idea where the garbage is from.

There are an estimated hundreds of tonnes.

Nguyện said local authorities and residents are working together to clear the mess. — VNS
