MoFA announces Deputy PM to visit US next week

(10-03-2007)

HA NOI — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Gia Khiem will pay an official visit to the US, said the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Le Dung.

"At the invitation of US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Gia Khiem will make an official visit to the US from March 11-16," he said.

Khiem’s entourages include representatives of the Government Office, ministries of Transport, Science and Technology, Posts and Telematics, and Education and Training.

The visit aims to boost the relationship between Viet Nam and the US, to strengthen relations on economy, trade, science and technology, education and training, and to discuss measures to implement the agreements made during the visit by US President George W. Bush to Viet Nam last November.

It is expected that Khiem will meet with Secretary of State Rice, as well as governmental officials and parliamentarians.

He will also visit some localities in the US, in addition to Washington, D.C.

New co-operation

"Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem’s upcoming visit to the US will be the opening of a new stage of co-operation between the two countries," said Vietnamese ambassador to the US Nguyen Tam Chien on Thursday.

Ambassador Chien told a Viet Nam News Agency correspondent in Washington that both countries recognised the visit as an opportunity to create impetus for development of further ties.

The delegation’s main activities will include meetings with the US political and business circles in order to exchange views and discuss concrete areas for co-operation.

Deputy PM Khiem also plans to meet overseas Vietnamese living in the US. "Vietnamese Party and State’s policies appreciate increasing contributions by the Vietnamese community in the US to developing the two countries’ relations," Chien said.

In addition, the diplomat noted that Deputy PM Khiem’s visit to the US will also be part of preparation for the first US visit by President Nguyen Minh Triet. — VNS
