HẢI PHÒNG — Illegal gasoline trade is happening frequently between truck drivers and transport enterprise owners on the stretch of National Route 5 passing through the northern port city of Hải Phòng.
Gasoline trade spots are sparsely located on the sides of the route’s stretch in An Dương District, the Lao Động (Labour) newspaper reported.
Looking very basic with a few roofing sheets to provide shelter, each spot is marked with a small neon sign that reads “SOS”, which truck drivers rely on to identify their buyers.
Truck drivers pull over to these spots, extract gasoline from their trucks’ tanks into containers given to them by buyers, and sell it in a blink of an eye, according to the report.
“Gasoline is bought at very high prices, almost as high as the State’s gasoline sales price,” driver Công, who frequently passes the gasoline trade area, said.
Thousands of litres of gasoline are being traded illegally each night without records or legal documents, according to the report.
Gasoline bought from truck drivers is poured into 200-litre tanks that are placed in personal warehouses of the buyers, and then sold to adjacent factories, private enterprises and local gasoline stations.
The trade activities have been continuing for a few years without any crackdown by authorities, mostly from 6pm until the break of dawn the next day, a long-term resident of the district said. — VNS
