Highway 1's 120km upgraded stretch to open on Sunday

HANOI (VNS) — The Ministry of Transport (MoT) on Sunday will officially open 120km of upgraded section on Highway 1 at southern Binh Thuan Province, a transport authority official has said.

Hoang Dinh Phuc, General Manager of the MoT's Project Management Unit 1, noted that the upgrading project has been completed seven months earlier than its schedule that was assigned by the ministry.

The project was divided into two parts under two different contractors.

Binh Thuan Highway 1A BOT Joint Stock Company has been in charge of upgrading 44.7km at a cost of VND2,587billion (about US$119 million) on the BOT (Built-Operation-Transfer) basis.

The other contractor, Project Management Unit 1, has been in charge of upgrading the remaining 73.2km in Binh Thuan Province on an investment cost of VND5,118 billion (about US$235 million) through loans from the government bonds.

After two years of construction, the upgraded section will be opened on Sunday and the collection of circulation toll will begin on the first day of July and will continue for 21 years.

Nguyen Van Phuong, general director of the Binh Thuan Highway 1A Join Stock Company, said vehicles can run at a speed of 60km/hour on the 20.5m-wide section that pass through residential areas and 80km/hour through non-residential areas. -- VNS
